I can only answer from my own perspective.

I am female. I am Australian, I was born and raised in Australia.

I was raised in a country where female equality is taught, if not completely practised. I had access to free education and free hospitals.

I was taught to be independent and self sufficient.

I was taught to speak out when I saw something wrong and to expect redress for wrongs.

I was lucky enough to never want for food or clothing or medical treatment.

The result of this upbringing is that I am reasonably well educated, articulate, able to survive on my own. travel the world and generally look after myself. I know how to find services I need and how to deal with any problems I encounter.

In short, I have faith in myself and my abilities. I truly believe I can do whatever I set out to do.

If I had not had the social and economic benefits I did, I do not believe I would have achieved this. I would have been too busy surviving day by day, more than likely with a dozen children and little chance of altering my lot.

The social factors meant I was expected to achieve, the economic factors allowed me to do so.

Not doing your own homework has a negative effect on your economic potential later in life. It may be something that has become socially acceptable in our culture, but it is foolish.
