Ok, here goes:
Cpu - Central processing unit
Does all processing of the maths and instructions
Memory - This tempoarily holds these instructions in which is known as a stack
Motherboard - This is the board that all the computer components are connected to. This allows each device to communicate with each other.
Bios - This stores the configuation of the system inc. time and date settings.
Graphics Card - This sends a signal to the monitor to display an appropriate picture from the motherboard.
Sound Card - Sends an audible signal to the speakers\headphones to allow the user to hear sound.
Hard drive - this is the component that stores permanent data on the system.
CD\DVD Rom - This allows you to read\access files from a cd\dvd etc.
Modem - This sends and recieves signals to access the Internet.
Monitor - Users use this to view the output of the system.
Thats the basics anyway.
Hope this helps...

BIOS
Pronounced "bye-ose," an acronym for basic input/output system. The BIOS is built-in software that determines what a computer can do without accessing programs from a disk. On PCs, the BIOS contains all the code required to control the keyboard, display screen, disk drives, serial communications, and a number of miscellaneous functions.
Motherboard
The "heart" of your PC -- it handles system resources (IRQ lines, DMA channels, I/O locations), as well as core components like the CPU, and all system memory. It accepts expansion devices such as sound and network cards, and modems.
Processor
The brain of the computer - the device capable of performing operations on data; often synonymous with central processing unit (CPU) Return
Hard Disk
A rigid non-removable disk in a computer and the drive that houses it. Hard disks store more data and can be accessed quicker than floppy disks
RAM
random-access memory: the most common computer memory which can be used by programs to perform necessary tasks while the computer is on; an integrated circuit memory chip allows information to be stored or accessed in any order and all storage locations are equally accessible
CD ROM / Writer
CD ROM stands for Compact Disk Read-Only Memory. CD ROMs store and read massive amounts of information on a removable disk platter or solid state storage chip. Unlike the data on hard drives and diskettes, data on CD ROMs can only be read--not altered--by the user. Also called "firmware."
Floppy Drive
A device inside your computer with a slot in the front to accept Floppy Disks. This drive is usually designated as the A: drive on your computer. Also called a "three and a half inch drive" for the size of the magnetic disk contained in the floppy disk itself.
KeyBoard
An input device similar to a typewriter, for the entry of text, numbers and punctuation
Mouse
A mouse is a handheld pointing device for computers, involving a small object fitted with one or more buttons and shaped to sit naturally under the hand. The underside of the mouse houses a device that detects the mouse's motion relative to the flat surface on which it sits. The mouse's 2D motion is typically translated into the motion of a cursor on the display.
Modem
Short for modulator/demodulator. A communications device that converts one form of a signal to another that is suitable for transmission over communication circuits, typically from digital to analog and then from analog to digital.
Monitor
display produced by a device that takes signals and displays them on a television screen or a computer monitor

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

Computer hardware
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Computer hardware is the physical part of a computer, including the digital circuitry, as distinguished from the computer software that executes within the hardware. The hardware of a computer is infrequently changed, in comparison with software and data, which are "soft" in the sense that they are readily created, modified or erased on the computer. Firmware is a special type of software that rarely, if ever, needs to be changed and so is stored on hardware devices such as read-only memory (ROM) where it is not readily changed (and is therefore "firm" rather than just "soft").
Most computer hardware is not seen by normal users. It is in embedded systems in automobiles, microwave ovens, electrocardiograph machines, compact disc players, and other devices. Personal computers, the computer hardware familiar to most people, form only a small minority of computers (about 0.2% of all new computers produced in 2003) Market statistics.
Personal computer hardware
A typical personal computer consists of a case or chassis in desktop or tower shape and the following parts:
Typical Motherboard found in a computerMotherboard or system board with slots for expansion cards and holding parts including:
Central processing unit (CPU)
Random Access Memory (RAM) - for program execution and short term data storage, so the computer doesn't have to take the time to access the hard drive to find something. More RAM can contribute to a faster PC. RAM is normally removable by being in slots on the motherboard.
Basic Input-Output System (BIOS) or Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) in newer computers
Buses :
PCI
PCI-E
USB
HyperTransport
CSI (expected in 2008)
AGP (being phased out)
ISA (outdated)
EISA (outdated)
Power supply - a case that holds a transformer, voltage control, and (usually) a cooling fan
Storage controllers of IDE, SATA, SCSI or other type, that control hard disk, floppy disk, CD-ROM and other drives; the controllers sit directly on the motherboard (on-board) or on expansion cards
Video display controller that produces the output for the computer display
Computer bus controllers (parallel, serial, USB, FireWire) to connect the computer to external peripheral devices such as printers or scanners
Some type of a removable media writer:
CD - the most common type of removable media, cheap but fragile.
CD-ROM Drive
CD Writer
DVD
DVD-ROM Drive
DVD Writer
DVD-RAM Drive
Floppy disk
Zip drive
USB Flash Drive
Tape drive - mainly for backup and long-term storage
Internal storage - keeps data inside the computer for later use.
Hard disk - for medium-term storage of data.
Disk array controller
Sound card - translates signals from the system board into analog voltage levels, and has terminals to plug in speakers.
Networking - to connect the computer to the Internet and/or other computers
Modem - for dial-up connections
Network card - for DSL/Cable internet, and/or connecting to other computers.
Other peripherals
In addition, hardware can include external components of a computer system. The following are either standard or very common.
Wheel MouseInput or Input devices
Text input devices
Keyboard
Pointing devices
Mouse
Trackball
Gaming devices
Joystick
Gamepad
Game controller
Image, Video input devices
Image scanner
Webcam
Audio input devices
Microphone
Output or Output devices
Image, Video output devices
Printer Peripheral device that produces a hard copy. (Inkjet, Laser)
Monitor Device that takes signals and displays them. (CRT, LCD)
Audio output devices
Speakers A device that converts analog audio signals into the equivalent air vibrations in order to make audible sound.
headset A device similar in functionality to that of a regular telephone handset but is worn on the head to keep the hands free.
