After several years of chatting it is possible to aproximately tell the age of someone. Of course, there is the mistake factor besides that someone can always play on you purposely, and there are always marginals. Usually, I make mistakes when I have a preconcept or when I am afraid of mistaking, in which case I give some years more. The key is to be intuitive and watch for signs, gaps, thoughts, etc. Or simply, start never asking the age, and start your inner guessing game... It will become as easy as determining the sex of someone, and quite enjoyable once you get the grip of it.
What I do is divide into groups: under 15, 15-20, around 20, around 25, around 30, and above 35. Then I try to sort the person into a group. Takes a couple of lines of chat, and no rush... By the way, you can make your own cathegories :P
Usually, younger chatters do not undertake the iniciative in chat. They stick to stereotype questions and insist for answers. They get confused easily, and run out of chat material. They often use the plz, for example asl plz... One can always take over the convesation where wanted. The around 25 cathegory, which is your person's 23, are people who are obviously not under 20, and do not have the "seriousness - complexity - iniciative" or way of thinking - if easier understood, (dont hold to the exact words) of those around 30. They are mature, yet not experienced...
People can always lie about what they say, but can harder/never lie how/the way they say what they say. (Only some 5% of people are nature-born liars...)
There are always more hints, but the overal idea is that you should use your intuition rather than be conclusive. If you are not into all this, you can always use the cam... :P
Hmm, who would lie to have 23?
What age would you give me?
From your question, I can conclude that your age... :P

Leave alone lying ...believing should be the question.
Recently i was in on of the chat rooms and the discussions were on the football game and then began to sort of "having a great player in the family". Some began to share saying that their dad was so good at it , while the others said it was their grand dad, brother and so on. All being discussed as to how hard and high the football could be kicked.
I jumped in too, and shared in the room saying that my dad was a great player once and then during the course of a game one day he kicked the ball high into the air, and that it had completely disappeared. The 'roomies' did not believe and more so abandoned the room when i said the football fell to the ground four days later with a note that read, "dont kick it up again, next time it would not be returned".

You really don't know. Unless they send you a copy of their ID or Drivers License etc. You just have to trust that there are people out there not into lying about who they are, and are happy with whom they are.

It is virtually impossible to find out anybody who lies in a chat room. Though! I did catch one female who lied! She said she had twins, and told me the names of them, yet when I asked her two days later, she gave me different names! Have a good day!

Ask them to turn on their cam...if their lips are moving, it's a forgone conclusion that at one point or another, they're lying!

Maybe you should change your question to "How will you know if someone is NOT lying in a chatroom?"
I've seen through so many lies in a chatroom that it just makes me very very sceptical.
