The Prime Minister of the UK is not elected as such. He is merely elected as another member of Parliament. It is constitutional convention that, following a General Election, the Queen calls upon the Leader of the party holding the majority of seats to form a Government and therefore that Leader becomes the Prime Minister (and First Lord of the Treasury). The only election the individual goes through (other than being elected to Parliament) is his/her election by her/his party (however that is held) as its Leader

In Canada the party picks a leader, this is done beforehand and that leader stays until a replacement is picked at a party convention. When the election occurs the party that wins the most seats is declared the winner and that leader they elected at the convention automatically becomes the Prime Minister. But, he had to win his seat ( seat = place as the representative for the people who elected him in a particular area of the country ) in that election as well. So his party wins 123 seats with the other parties all combined not having more, the Prime Minister has a majority parliament. If the other parties combined had more seats but his party had the most of all the parties then his government would be a minority government and could fall or force another election at any time that the parliament did not fully support any legislation his party put forward. Usually this is within a year or two of the election that just put him there. Forcing another election too early angers the voters who just voted and they direct the anger at anyone elected whether it be the party in power or not as they are not attempting to work together which is what a government is supposed to do. I hope this answers your question.

In Canada, you vote for a local representative who represents a political party. The party who gets the most members elected selects a person to be the prime minister. This person is usually the front runner of the party or the leader.
