Unplug it. Undo the trap on the bottom and take the ball out. You will see 2 little rollers with a furry strip down the middle. Clean the fur off with a tissue. Wipe the ball with a clean tissue. Put it all back together and it should work. If not, you need a new mouse.

Is it a ball mouse? If it is open the bottom and have a look at the contacts at the top and side. You might need a pin, or something thin with an edge to clean the gunk off.
Otherwise buy a new mouse.

Sounds like you are still using a ball mouse. You can unscrew the bottom and remove the roller ball. Use a tissue and gently wipe/clean the axis inside for both side and vertical movements. Place back the roller ball and tighten the screw for the cover. Your mouse should be working now.

you probably still use a ball mouse....
1. Take out the ball.
2. Clean the inside of the mouse.
3. Replace the ball.
that's it
(if it still doesn't work - verify that your mouse conector is completly placed inside it's socket)
