What?!? And all these years I've been paying. . .
No, we are absolutely required to pay income taxes! We actually OVER-pay each year, and then in the Spring we get a partial refund. That's always nice, to help cover any credit card purchases we may have made at Christmas, or to do a home improvement project. But many Americans end up having to pay in even more, because not enough has been deducted from their wages throughout the previous year. OUCH!

Sixteenth Amendment (1913): Authorizes unapportioned federal taxes on income.

In Canada, taxation falls under Article VIII in the Constitution Act of 1867. In short, it's legal in Canada too.

Americans are legally required to pay taxes. If you don't it's called tax evasion and you can go to jail. We have all kinds of taxes, property tax, sales tax, state tax, federal tax. The only time someone can avoid paying taxes they are paid with is if they work under the table which is illegal.

In the US, we are legally required to pay federal income tax. You have been exposed to a myth. The US Constitution was amended, many years ago, to allow the federal government to gouge us at will.

You may be subject to less taxes in the US, but you have to pay. You may be subject to even lower taxes in Mexico, but you still have to pay.

Everyone has to pay tax. Canadians pay up the wazoo with GST and retail sales tax. Then we get to pay our income tax. And if we buy something from the US, we get hit with tax when we bring it in.
