To clarify, cricket is not a religion in India. It isn't even followed keenly. And most who do, simply don't understand the game (Look at the quality of questions posted in Yahoo answers).
If cricket was a religion, why do domestic matches have emty stands? And where were those religious fanatics when the ICC Cup matches were played in empty stadia?

Because as you have already mentioned that India is so poor in all other sports and we only play cricket at its best , and if we dont even perform in that also then its really a matter of concern .
There is so much of money and media attention invovled in cricket and only cricket and then also we need to stress our brains to remember when was the last time India won a Cup or series .Seriously we need to think that whats wrong with the guys playing the game for the country.
We need to really think and take some solid steps so that the performance of the team can be improved, and who is really performing stays in he team.
So its not the criticism that work but action that is the uttermost demand of the time.

Very good question.
For some reason Cricket in India is a religion. People turn fanatics, during India's Success. Other sports played in India are huge in number. I should one of the sports where India has been doing well is Chess follwed by Carroms. Indoor Sports.
Outdoor sports nothing to beat Cricket for popularity. Players are trated as Demi Gods. Sachin the biggest god of all. Has been playing for 16+ years and still one of teh highest paid Brand ambasdors in the country more than even Film stars. India has always shown the super stars coming and disappearing.
Criticism on India cricket is because expectations are high. India showed promise. No more. Indians performance can be called disastrous at the least. Horrendous. Criticism would be high... for a relgion... for the virtual and eventual national sport... And I say Indian Cricket Deserves it.

I really do not know why such hue and cry about India's poor performance in South Africa. More experienced and stronger Indian Teams have been bowled out for 54 runs in 26.3 overs, 63 runs in 25.5 overs, 79 runs in 34.2 overs, 78 runs in 24.1 overs by teams like Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia in the past. We have not heard such hue and cry that time. I feel that the present criticism is only politically motivated as Sharad Pawar, Union Minister is the President of BCCI.
It is a matter of share that politicians are paying too much attention to the cricket than the genuine needs of the peple

For the betterment.
Criticism is very important.
Important is the
CAPABILITY
RESPONSILITY
ACCONTABILITY.
All these will come ONLY-IF
Selection and benefit / payment of
BCCI
SELECTOR
COACH
CAPTAIN
PLAYERS
are linked to performance in the respective capacity.
FOR EXAMPLE Shri RAHUL
1) is a great TEST PLAYER, can play for TEST but not ODI. What he scored in last ODI, he tried to be retain in the team. In ODI total score by INDIVIDUAL along with rate of score is very very important. He can never play fast. Therefore he shall not be choosen for ODI.
2) South Africa was 6 out with 75 runs. Still he could not control upto scoring 277. He is the worst CAPTAIN.
He shall not be choosen for CAPTAINCY.
Then who is CAPTAIN?
Choose some better capable. If connot be select the best player of one ODI as CAPTAIN in the next Match.

Every one needs some identity to keep their confidence and pride high. As there is no other option, cricket has taken that position by default in the subcontinent.
