Depends on how they'll take it. If they'll be just as happy & relieved (you both know things aren't working out), then in a public place where you can both go your separate ways is good (and a thoughtful "last date"). If they totally don't expect it, then some preparation, like casual conversation about not being in the same place/same people you were once, and later telling him/her about needing more sapce/time to think about your future (even though that's old, it still softens the blow a little), and finally repeating the latter and moving on (more difficult if you've been living together, but possible). If you think they'll become violent/abusive, have a friend or two with you, preferably one who can handle/restrain the person and one who has 9-1-1 on "speed dial" just in case. Only you can be the final judge of how your soon-to-be-ex will take it; cover all bases.

There is no nice way to break up with someone. However, doing it face to face is probably the best way to do it. A friend of mine recently got dumped by text and said how that felt like the other person didn't care about her feelings at all, and just took the easy way out. When you break up face to face, you can be more gentle about it.

And above all else, be honest. That person deserves to know the truth about why you are ending things.

Breaking up by text message I find is the nicest way of doing it.

You avoid all the face-to-face awkwardness, recriminations, shouting matches and possible violence.

It is not necessarily the nicest way to get dumped, but then again...in a break up scenario it should be all about meeeeeeeee
and not the dumpee!!

I guess it would depend on the reason for the break Up. the question should really be "When is it approriate to be nice when breaking up?". If he is treating you without respect and seeing other woman I wouldn't even worry about being nice. If he isn't being nice to you then I say make it hurt when you leave.

Say that you have nothing against him but you feel that you are not suitable for each other as your emotions are stand still and this is out of your hands , it is not anybody's fault and you have to be honest cause you respect him , then with a nice smile on your face wish him good luck :)

Of course there isn't a nice way, but try and be honest and to the point, don't patronise the person or put them down. Good luck if you have to take this step, it's never easy... :)

Face to face is the hardest for the person doing it but is by far the best way in terms of clarity and communication!

Can I suggest thet you use NONE of the following lines...

It's not you, it's me.

I was on a rebound.

I just can't see a future for us.

I'm gay.

And above all else, don't try to bullsh*t your way out of it. Just be honest.
