What are the chances of the automobile being eliminated from all cities in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia? And what are the chances of auto-free cities being built? You hear about this movement all the time on the Web.

None!! no matter how efficient public transport will become, there's still gonna be those places you can only go by use of private automobile.
But there might be better chances of those cars being hybrid(fuell cell, electric) ones instead of the petrol/diesel internal combustion autos.
Still, that might not happen for at least another lifetime.

Not likely however personnel vehicles may end up disappearing leaving only taxi's and buses,subway trains. The cities will only grow in population until it is totally impractical for personnel cars thou some of the rich may still be able to buy waivers at extreme costs. We can already see this happening in London.

It will happen as soon as we can step onto a circle on the floor and say "Energize".
Actually, more likely, it will happen when the human population goes from 6.5 billion to a few hundred thousand.

cars means we buy oil, which funds the companies which fund the politicians. so the pollies arent going to get rid of their sugar daddy.
