Modern pencils are made industrially by mixing finely ground graphite and clay powders, adding water, forming long spaghetti-like strings, and firing them in a kiln. The resulting strings are dipped in oil or molten wax which seeps into the tiny holes of the material, resulting in smoother writing. A juniper or incense-cedar plank with several long parallel grooves is cut to make something called a slat, and the graphite/clay strings are inserted into the grooves. Another grooved plank is glued on top, and the whole thing is then cut into individual pencils, which are then varnished or painted.

with graet difficulty I imagine......mmmm...lets see get a solid block of graphite and cut it into several hundred sections with a fine saw.....proceed to lathe one into 1/16th inch pefectly round peices 8 inches in length. Don't be discouraged if they break at first. Fine sand with several grades of sandpaper then check for perfect symmetry with a vernier caliper. Turn a piece of oregon wood on a lathe to 3/8 inch tolerance and sand all six sides to form a pentagonal stick, Paint red with perhaps a black end and gold pinstripe.....)at this point you may wish to have a signwriter add a logo in gold leaf)then drill a hole precisely down the middle and fit the lead. Be careful not to lick your fingers at this stage. When the pencil is assembled finally sharpen. (Sharpeners can be purchased at any newsagent, supermarket or art store cheaply)

just buy one, it's easier and many, many times cheaper than making your own!

Oh and just to clarify that b-Overit's detailed explanation above contains one minor inaccuracy - if you sand the wood into a six-sided stick it's not pentagonal, it's hexagonal.
