I didn't know there was a word.

It is quite common and simply a matter of personal choice. In some countries/cultures it is the norm, as in Italy for instance.

There is no law requiring a woman take the man's name.

In fact it is quite legal for a man to take his wife's name, and I have friends that did precisely that. Her family name was not going to continue and they liked it better - his surname was Smith. He had a great time going to the banks, licence authority etc changing his name after the wedding - he loved the look of surprise and the places who didn't think he could do it. He was just like that though!

This is done alot now days. Especially if the woman is attorney or doctor ect... Tradionally if a man name was listed first. No credit was due to the woman . she would then be listed secondly even if she was a doctor or professor.
Alot of women have practices in their names and the retain their names even after marriage to keep their business intact for business purposes. If you look way back in history women of any business, even the queen of england never took the mans name.

I kept my maiden name. I wasn't planning my divorce or anything. My family is from the Bahamas and we own land down there, there are streets and sink holes and libraries and stores names after us. I will eventually hyphenate it when I have kids, but I'm definitely not changing it completely. There is a lot of history that goes along with my maiden name, I have a really big family and I want to stay true to that.

i'm classic, so i might gladly take my hubby's final call. some women the two basically like their final call too lots, hate their husband's final call, or are doing it for another bizarre reason. they at the instant are not misguided or incorrect. we will not say all of us concept is nice. It basically relies upon on the guy's perspectives. I trust the 1st poster, it would be form of annoying to have different names in one better half and young toddlers. as nicely, 2 married persons are meant to be related (or something alongside those lines), so having the husband's final call sounds like it would be unifying.
