This happens when you heat them up. It makes the atoms of this solid speed up ad therefore the solid as a whole will expand.

when u heat things, they expand.
in solids the particles are packed close together and when they are subjected to heat, they move faster and furthur away from each other. thus, they expand

for different reasons, ice in particular is odd, because as it cools down it should compress, however Ice is different, it is because of the atomic compound of hydrogen and oxygen, like magnets, the hydrogen will push away from hydrogen and likewise oxygen with oxygen, it is because of their placement within H2O that makes it push apart
