Any of Jane Austen's books -- they are all so witty and brilliant.

For more modern times, I'd read Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series because they always keep me intrigued and on the edge of my seat.

Good question!

My first choice would be Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol---not too long, one of the best stories ever written in English, written by a man who loved to read aloud----and one of my personal favorites.

Another choice would be one of Raymond Chandler's mysteries: Farewell My Lovely. I've read this one aloud to my wife and she got a real kick out of it. Great language, characters and plot!
