The debt was partly student loan, partly credit card, partly overdraft and partly phone bill. Can they send me to prison? Is there a certain amount of time after which these will be cancelled?

At the most they can screw you. They can definatley take a strict action coz its not the bank money its the money from general public which goes to bank as saving. Make a clear statment to them that you are willing to pay at later date.

No you have been running away from your debt problems,when you come back get it touch with the creditors and make arrangements to pay the debt,s over a period of time
