The main benefit from having two ethernet ports is being able to connect to two different networks, being able to connect to the network (or internet) and another computer directly (using your computer to share your internet connection), or being able to connect to two computers directly.

You could try plugging both into the same switch, but if your switch uses only one cable to connect to the modem, any benefit is lost (which wouldn't be a benefit in the first place because internet connections are usually slower than network connections)

If the card include 2 same ports RJ-45 type then you can make this machine as server, e.g. if you have a DSL router then you can connect one cable from the oruter to one of those ports and the other port can be connected to a switch for distributing the Internet to a network of PCs or devices so that way the server would have full control on this network and the Internet going to it. e.g. the bandwidth used for each connected machine.

Hello Deja, I think you got a new/Ex server explain of usage of 2 network adapter sometimes in some environment you may find plenty of employees accessing server for reading company mail real big mails that server is faster but network bottleneck is there they add new network card for allowing people to access the other card same computer but more traffic speed, sometimes it's use as layer between two network places like firewall so one card leads to Internet and another lead within the company ;)

One is most likely a modem port, the RJ-45 connector (ethernet) should be a little bit wider. Look again :-)
