He did quite well (11th in a field of 30 odd, I think) in a WRC race recently and said afterwards that Rally is harder than F1.

It would have depended on which team he ended up driving for.

I see MS fans are still hoping for their driver's return. Let me tell you something: He himself mentioned that he won't be returning as a driver in F1.

Back to the question. Maybe he would have done well, but only after a season or two. Gathering up 4-wheel experience is important for F1. I also heard that he recently tested a DTM Mercedes C-Class with some good results.

The problem with Rossi was that we were never given his exact time only told: 'he was just 'x' slower than Michael'.

I think in the end it became a publisity stunt for all involved. Like Fernando said: If Rossi is given enough time to practise proprely then he could maybe get on to the podium or a win but if he (Fernando) was given the same treatment on a motorbike he could also possibly do the same in Moto GP!

I'm afraid we'll never know if Rossi could have been another John Surtees, the only man to win a world driving championship on two and four wheels.
Johnny Cecotto was less successful when he made the switch to Formula One.

He is fast on 2 wheels, has good race craft and is a proven champion on the bike. I reckon he would have what it takes.
