No, it's not a scam - IE7 is indeed much more secure than IE6. (It still sucks, though, so you'll be much better off using a different browser.) The improved security is why Microsoft is pushing IE7 on you through Windows Update.
You *can*, however, uninstal IE7 - and even instruct Windows Update to stop insisting that you need it - see the URL below.
Nobody is producing viruses in order to force you to buy anti-virus programs. There are much simpler and more effective ways in which viruses make money for their creators - by relaying spam, installing adware, stealing passwords to bank accounts and so on. Also, the security updates of Windows are free - including IE7.

IE is a spyware and virus magnet
United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team:
"There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser"

Use Firefox for better protection

In the mean time it sounds like IE has done a fine job at getting you infected with spyware
Download the following (if you don’t have them already) and then UPDATE them. After they are updated scan with all these programs and then trash what ever they find.
These are all 100% free except for the last one

it sounds like you have some adware/spyware on your machine already. IE 7 wont fix this. what you need to do is download spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html) install that to get rid of your adware, then upgrade to IE7 if you wish. IE7 is free btw, and always has been. You might try firefox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ however, it is better than IE 7 in my opinion..
good luck, zach

1) You don't have to install it until you want to.
2) It's a free download.
3) It's still buggy. I'm using MSIE 6.0 until they iron out all the issues with the new one.
I'm not going to beta test their stuff.

when vista becomes released soon i.e 7 will become the new supported one, so ie6 will soon become not supported (like sp1 is no longer supported).
i would wait till the end to get ie7 due to all the bugs and problems with it still.

Please go to www.mozilla.com, the firefox browser is much more stable and secure than any IE. Plus it offered multi tab browsing way before IE 7. Check it out
