Use a piece of air tube - the kind you use for the airstone - to vacuum the gunk from the gravel. Place one end about an inch from the gravel and the other end in the bucket. Creat a siphon so that the water starts to fill the bucket. Now move the gravel around a little - don't frighten the fish- and let the gunk get sucked out. Try to get all the gravel clean without removing too much water. Remove about 10% of the water and replace it with fresh, dechlorinated water. And you can do this every week. Although a gravelcleaner is much easier to use.

What you need is a gravel siphon, a hose with a wider piece to use in the tank. You use this when you do your regular water change.
Don't waste money on the battery operated vaccuums as they make one job into two jobs.
For now, any hose or tubing will allow you to siphon. If you haven't done it for a while or if you have undergravel filtration don't do all of the tank in one go as you could disturb the bacteria colonies and/or release lurking toxins into the tank.
Until you get the siphon you could just stir the gravel to float out the gunge & then jug out water to do a change.

I personally wouldn't mess with it, but you can stir up the gravel in the tank this will make the "mess" suspend in the water for a while and you can dip the "messy" water out. This however puts a lot of stress on the fish so I would just wait until I could buy a vac.

I don't have one of the gravel hoses yet either. I just got an old screen out of a window and pour the gravel on it and wash them off. It's easy and it works.

just tank an airline, and start the suction then hold it close to the gravel and it will start sucking up the junk. You may need to restart if it gets clogged.

You could use a siphoning device on it. I bought one and used it 1 time only. It was just too slow. Maybe you have more patience than i do.
