So I bought a brand new 30GB iPod Video a few days ago and when I analyzed it using Windows Defragmenter, I noticed that it was VERY fragmented. I had loaded and deleted a bunch of videos and albums in the past few days. I know about restore and how it erases everything and defragments at the same time, but I don't WANT to have to reupload all 20+ gigs of music and videos that I spent a long time tagging (yes, I tag my stuff manually--I can't stand iTunes for playing music even though I'm stuck using it for iPod), yknow?

Is it safe for me to just defrag or will it feck up my iPod in any way? I keep reading conflicting answers on the net but no one seems to be able to provide a 100% definite answer as to why it's OK or why it'll ruin/could ruin your iPod.

it is safe. go ahead and defrag.

It's just like any other drive (your hard drive for example).

View your previous ipod in My computing gadget as a USB force. seek for the folders until eventually you discover your music, and reproduction it on your not difficulty-free force. in case you get carry of the songs via itunes, the archives ought to come over with all files (names, artist and so on) intact, yet maximum mp3's will take position with 4 letter names like SHHU or OPPE. they are nonetheless usable. you may now reproduction the former archives on your new ipod comparable to conventional.

I have had an iPod for a year and defrag doesn't erase or ruin the HD in the iPod. At least in my experience.
