i watched american haunting too. immediately i did a research. and i found out, american haunting is VERY VERY BADLY RATED. in the movie, it shows John Bell rape his daughter wayyyyyyyy back in the past(the last scene), thus his daughter created a poltergeist, that in turn torture betsy for not telling the whole family about the rape.

but that's just the director's point of view !!
i find it very very strange and stupid, how can ur own poltergeist torture ur own body? ITS STUPIDITY. this director obviously didnt take his medication.

many ppl believe that the poltergiest was in fact the witch who was angry with john bell, not betsey's soul. the reason why the director think that the torture ended is because of john bell's death. (and thats a fact, the torture ended because of john bell's death)

BUT !! that aint no way to produce a movie and indicate that John Bell rape Betsy !! that director is humilating John Bell without any CONCRETE EVIDENCE !!

Once I found out about the Bell Witch which the movie An American Haunting is based,I did some of my own research on the web. What made this tale so appealing that it's the first true documented haunting. Just enter Bell Witch in search engine and lots things about it will pop up. Recently one ghost hunter visited a cave and her videophotographer felt chills in that cave and even the farmer's property is said to be haunted as well.

In the movie yes.

In the accounts of the real Bell Witch nothing points to this conclusion.

I rented this movie having grown up reading stories about the Bell Witch and thought oh how cool. But it turned out to be a cheap way to make a buck. It had little to do with the real Bell Witch stories. It seemed more like a very bad attempt at mimicking M. Night Shyamalan's style of directing.

Making the story about rape was bad enough but the Bell Witch is known for being the only court case where it is recognized that a ghost killed someone. But in the movie the girl in human form kills her dad.

I knew a girl who said she was related to the Bell Witch story. She was part Cherokee and crazier than a bedbug!
The Bell Witch story is about a white man who got an Indian woman pregnant, and then killed her to cover it
up, because he was married!
Then the Indians put a curse on him. My woman friend was the proof that evil comes back around on us. She had to suffer for the evil some shaman called up before her time. Unlesss she was even more involved in a past-life karma way I never found out about.

Not according to popular legend. It was fiction created by the director. The actual story of the Bell Witch is pretty simple and boring, so I think a lot of creative license was taken to make it entertaining for the general public.

GOOD ANSWER L:ANCE...But, I believe the girl couldn't remember that she had been raped (she blocked it)..and her inner spirit was angry and trying to get her to remember.
The torture stoped because she finally remembered and her inner anger was released... I watched the movie some time back...could be way off, but, this was my impression.... I will look up the bell witch of Tennessee now..I know nothing of the story...other then what I saw in the movie..
