i know what she meant, but it's funny to me how someone with millions of dollars can enlighten us regular citizens on how to help people out, or instruct us on good deed doing.

I didn't see the Oprah episode you refer to, but normally this means to do someone a favor in advance, without necessarily expecting payback. You can pay someone back for a favor they did you in the past, or you can "pay it forward" by just doing something good for someone, as a way of making the world a better place. This is akin to "random acts of kindness" and the Biblical "casting bread upon the water."

I understand what she meant. Pay it forward or paying it forward refers to repaying the good deeds one has received by doing good things for other unrelated people.

The phrase "pay it forward" as a moral philosophy first appeared in Catherine Ryan Hyde's novel Pay It Forward and in 2000 it was adapted into a Warner Brothers film, Pay It Forward. In the book and movie it is described as an obligation to do three good deeds for others in repayment of a good deed that one receives, and that such good deeds should be things that the person cannot accomplish on their own. The recipient of such acts of kindness is then expected to do three good deeds for others in repayment for the help they have received. In this way, the need to help each other can spread exponentially through society, creating a social movement with the hopes of making the world a better place.

When someone helps you in a way you cannot pay back, or they do not want you to do anything for them; then "paying it forward" means to do something to help a person who crosses your path and needs help from you in the future. That is how you genuinely pay the person who helped you.

I understood the reference to the movie. Her short explanation when posting her Yahoo!Answers question covered the term enough for folks to give an answer... well how many answers?!? OMG!
