LOL. To be honest it should have already worked if you helped people because the reward of helping people is the help itself, it should fill you with great joy. If you're looking for something else you're doing it for the wrong reasons.
That's what karma is. Not 'OOH I SAVED 10,000 SOULS CAN I GET A PLAYSTATION3 NOW?'
The playstations are nice but they have nothing to do with Karma. =)

It could come back to you in this lifetime, or another. Karma carries over to other lives.
If you're waiting on good karma to come back to you, remember, to perform a truly selfless act of kindness, you should never expect anything good in return, including karma.
If expecting bad karma, the longer the better :)
