Well I couldn't find anything that would give me directions from a bart station. But Mapquest did say this about the road system. Now, I don't believe them. I haven't driven in that area in years and I can't believe it's improved any. Sorry I couldn't find anything on BART, that used to be my favorite way around. Ah, here is BARTs homepage and it says BART still goes to the airport, sorry, been gone way too long.

Don't take a taxi. The prices are ridiculously high (expect to pay $50.00 plus tip).
The BART station is located next to Concourse G in the International Terminal. The fare is $5.15 to any of the four Downtown stations, and trains depart every 15-20 minutes.
The ride from SFO airport to Powell Street station takes 29 minutes, which is actually not that bad compared to other airport-to-subway connections (like O'Hare or JFK).

If you are visiting BART is a good option. You can pay for a cab as well but it will be more expensive. BART will drop you right a Powell St. If you try to drive parking is expensive and really driving in an unfamiliar city is a pain. BART and Muni (bus) can take you just about anywhere you want to go within the city.

Bart is a very good choice. Get on any train at the airport. Get off at Powell Street Station. It's as easy as it sounds. Have a good trip.

BART is your absolute best bet...barring something special from your hotel like a shuttle. But BART is easy, clean, and reliable. It's sort of expensive to take every day, but one time from SFO to Powell street will be about 4 or 5 bucks. Coming from a resident.....You can't beat it.

Yes, I would use the Bart. They have a good info desk at the International airport where they can help direct you.

BART (rapid transit train) is definitely the way to go into the city. The BART trains are right in the terminal, and there are several stops in the city. Taking a bus or streetcar after you get off is the next logical step. You can look at the SF transit website to find bus numbers, times, etc. Take layers of clothing! SF can be very cold/cool, even in mid-summer, when the fog rolls in!
