Take her out for a nice dinner and maybe even a movie so she will not be alone on her birthday. Since she is only a friend, I would try and give her something on a small scale. Maybe a framed photo of the two of you, a nice journal or a DVD that has special meaning to the two of you (something that you went together to see). I think the key is to get her out and have fun together!

try to make it a special day for her...
i don't know what kind of girl is but u could try to buy her some flowers (i suggest to buy 8 red/white roses and one white/red) it would by a very impressive bouquet.
then during the day time u should have some children fun... go with her at a kind of Disney land or at a zoo...
then a dinner and a movie and it was a very nice day :D
if u want to buy a real present too, i suggest to take a bracelet.

Godiva chocolates, Chanel fragrance, romantic DVDs, candle lit dinner. a little day trip to some vineyard, or if you want to make it very romantic then go foer a long walk where in the middle of the way she finds a box with her name inside is a box of chocolates for her, walk further down and there is another box instructing her to go to some cafe do not forget to place a red rose in the box where another box awaits with a pretty dress or fragrance directing her to a quiet candle lit dinner you have organized fo her Lot's champagne music and fun

Take her to dinner and buy her a nice bday card. She'll like that. Buy her something nice but not expensive she'll appericate the fact that you went out and did something just for on her bday especially while she's out of town and not really expecting something.

Have a birthday dinner with her- make it at a place where the staff sings and embarrasses her (I like that sort of stuff). Bring her flowers. You could do a movie marathon or something... you're not the only one lacking creativity, mate. Haha.

just spend some time with her so she'll know that she's not all alone. take her out to dinner, and just have a friend-to-friend chat. she'll like that. and then depending on what she likes to do.. shopping or go to the movies or whatever, you can ask her. hope this helped. good luck :)

a big bouquet of red roses with a nice poem inside you can find online, and offer to do anything she would like to do for a whole day and end it with a nice candle lit dinner

If she's just a friend, spent time with her and memorize of the good old days with "Remember when.....". But if she's that special friend, show her that romantic and sensitive side of you. (Do something that she will never expect you to do.)

Personally, I would like a very nice interesting big book about one of the things that I like, but mind you, not all girls are like me, so it's your choice...

Probably just to spend quality time with her.
Nice Dinner.
Movie later or cocktails somewhere nice where you can chat.
Talk to her about her previous birthdays, to help her remember good times.
