Slavery started in Britain where the army kept control of farm labourers. Australia and America were founded on the backs of British slaves. All of these were white. All of these were British, but as it was then, so it is today. We don't count.
Before you scream racism remember for whom the regret was made. Now that is racism.

Thank you for your comments that are indeed enlightening. I was refering to this country and they exported them in there thousands to America before it became the U.S.A. They were known as Bondsmen where the bond lasted 99 years.
As late as 1890 kids were slaves to their masters who used them in brothels of up chimneys and workhouses hired them out by the day.
There are many more examples too but Blair is pandering for votes so they don't get a mention.
Since we are the most regulated, spied on and listened to country in the World I think he has done enough.

Tony Blair has taken away our identity by telling us that we are British and not ENGLISH, so why not have a football team for Britain (as there is now no English men to play for England, the same goes for Rugby and Cricket and any other team that is still called England) also wants to re-write history now!
Is he that ashamed of his country's history that he wants to apologise for all and anything that has been done by this country in the past. Why does Blair assume that the only slaves where of ethnic origin, A lot of white English/Scottish and Welsh where sent to the New colonies of America and Australia as convicts. Some of these convicts where sent to these countries for just stealing a piece bread. I think though that racism in this country is a bit one sided.

Regret is not a word that should be used. We should learn from past mistakes not to let them happen again anywhere.
The city of Bristol is pandering to Blairs' whim by wanting to get rid of names that are associated with the Slave Trade there. This is wrong. Again, acknowledge the past of the city, teach kids about its past and how wrong it may have been - dont just bulldoze its past to avoid difficult questions. This is how the Japanese have dealt with the WWII issues, and look at how many people that upset?

Errrrr even though Britain were involved in the slave trade your facts are not quite correct..... so im guessing that you are black but dont know all your facts. Black Africans had slaves in Africa long before the white man.
For two hundred years, 1440-1640, Portugal had a monopoly on the export of slaves from Africa. It is notable that they were also the last European country to abolish the institution - although, like France, it still continued to work former slaves as contract labourers, which they called libertos or engagés à temps. It is estimated that during the 4 1/2 centuries of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Portugal was responsible for transporting over 4.5 million Africans (roughly 40% of the total). During the eighteenth century however, when the slave trade accounted for the transport of a staggering 6 million Africans, Britain was the worst transgressor - responsible for almost 2.5 million. (A fact often forgotten by those who regularly cite Britain's prime role in the abolition of the slave trade.)
The triangular trade:
Expanding European empires in the New World lacked one major resource -- a work force. In most cases the indigenous peoples had proved unreliable (most of them were dying from diseases brought over from Europe), and Europeans were unsuited to the climate and suffered under tropical diseases. Africans, on the other hand, were excellent workers: they often had experience of agriculture and keeping cattle, they were used to a tropical climate, resistant to tropical diseases, and they could be "worked very hard" on plantations or in mines.
Africans had been traded as slaves for centuries -- reaching Europe via the Islamic-run, trans-Saharan, trade routes. Slaves obtained from the Muslim dominated North African coast however proved to be too well educated to be trusted and had a tendency to rebellion.
Between 1450 and the end of the nineteenth century, slaves were obtained from along the west coast of Africa with the full and active co-operation of African kings and merchants. (There were occasional military campaigns organised by Europeans to capture slaves, especially by the Portuguese in what is now Angola, but this accounts for only a small percentage of the total.) In return, the African kings and merchants received various trade goods including beads, cowrie shells (used as money), textiles, brandy, horses, and perhaps most importantly, guns. The guns were used to help expand empires and obtain more slaves, until they were finally used against the European colonisers. The export of trade goods from Europe to Africa forms the first side of the triangular trade.
So as you can see... I think you need to know a few more facts... hope this helps

it really is a complicated question -- enable me answer it this way -- and that i'm hoping that you'll take a even as to study the completed answer and imagine about it. a million. My family contributors became VERY anti-slavery. From the time of the Revolution's end we were abolitionists. (we are from upstate huge apple). We even hosted a tiny element of the underground railroad on our ancestral farm. Now, do I experience sorry about the actual incontrovertible actuality that element of united statesa. held slaves? sure, I do. Do I spend time wondering about it and actively "feeling undesirable?" No, i do not. It became a terrible element. Many human beings hostile it. My family contributors between them. there became substantial bloodshed. It ended. 2. enable's quick ahead to the Thirties and 40s. by maximum money owed between 60 and 70% of each and every of the Jews contained in the German occupied territories died at German fingers. All credible students agree that the demise toll became between 5 and six million. A terrible atrocity. many human beings (human beings and others) hostile it. My family contributors between them. there became large bloodshed. It ended. My significant different is ethnically Jewish (religiously he's Wiccan, yet ethnically he's Jewish). As a Jew he's saddened by understanding that this got here about to his grandparent's era. As an recommended guy he has discovered the hazards of such extremism. although, he does no longer stay on it. He does no longer blame modern-day Germans or Poles. He strikes on. maximum Jews do. maximum Germans also bypass on. It became terrible, they preserve in mind that, yet there are different concerns now. the alternative isn't powerful to the guy, the life-style, or the international. For the African American community -- getting previous the triumphing last prejudices; getting college educations; reliable jobs; and a destiny for oncoming generations remember -- very much. for most ecu human beings, quite contained in the North, which fought to free the African slaves -- it really is a regrettable remember of heritage. it isn't something to stay on now, anymore than it really is going to be for you. For everybody it really is a regrettable remember of heritage. we'd want to continually reflect lengthy adequate to make sure we can by no ability repeat it -- then, everybody might want to bypass on. it really is extra useful for the guy, the community, and the international. Kindest ideas, Hermes

regrets the slave trade? wont do any good regretting anything that has already happened you cant change it
does he realise the slave trade that is going on in this country NOW, how many are being shipped to this country by criminals to work as prostiitutes
maybe he should be concentrating more on the problems that are happening in this country today instead of trying to score brownie points with everyone all the time with his condescending attitude.
maybe if he crawled out of his backside for a few minutes he might sound a bit more genuine

Slavery did not start in Britain.................. you can look back at almost all previous civilisations and see slavery..... for example the Roman Empire and the Egyptians.......... and it's a bit late to say sorry 200 years later. Just accept that it happened and it was wrong, then learn from it. All this talking about saying sorry is just a waste of time, its happened and its over, forget it.

Okay, because that was white on white slavery and also because it was due to classism, no one in their right mind is going to bring up racism.
The white slaves you speak of were often referred to as indentured slaves in my history classes. Some were criminals working off fines. The point is because they were white they were allowed to work off their debts, black slaves weren't really allowed to buy their freedom back till much later. Many did, by the way.
You're reference to white on white slavery is no where near and never will be analogous to white on black slavery.
Who are the we in "we don't count."?

I am not a racist or a biggot but i honestly think this is going a bit too far .I was going to say the same as Robert B but he beat me too it . there were allways slaves in the past The Romans took slaves from where ever they went the Egyptians had slaves to build their pyramids when we lived in tribes and captured any weaker tribe we had them for slaves .this was the mentality of the past and we can`t be held responsible for what our ancestors did
And apart from all that i can`t believe the slimy Blair and his deep sorrow not for one minute Yet more of his manipulating if you ask me

Apologising for events in not-so-recent history is bizarre, and I find it disturbing. Who are we apologising to? It seems the level of public debate has descended to the level of 10 year olds "debating" in the classroom - full of knee-jerk reactions, and ill-considered gestures.: "Oh yeah, oh yeah, we're sorry for the slavery thing, and um, the feudal stuff was wrong too cos of all the bad men in charge, and um, we're sorry for the crusades, uh, and oh yeah some of my ansestors were Romans so I guess we should apologise for those too cos they were naughty".
GROW UP!
