duo-core processors are 2 different processors but are linked. the reason they have this is it makes processing faster. if you have one single processor..it does all the work, it has to process that much more stuff. the duo-core utilizes 2 seperate processors to make the computer run faster, only one of the processors will be doing the job (and have to process less). if you have a duo 1.83...it has the equivalent of a 2.66 ghz processor. but when you choose to do something, it only uses the one needed (1.83) and it doesn't have to process as much info as a normal 2.66. and yes if one processor fails..neither are any good.

First thing Dual core processors has two processors on a single unit. But they share the same circuit.
The functioning of the processor is in such a way that it hands over some routine to the secondary processor in case the load on the primary is more.
It doesn't work like kidneys !!!!

A Pentium D has two cores. A Pentium 4 has only one core. So a dual core processor is like having two processors, but you only need one piece of hardware.
If one core shorts out the whole processor is probably done for.

dont confuse Dual Core with the Core 2 Duo...major difference.
The 2 cores are not to help or serve as back-up, but let each run different tasks at the same time, little software is written now to take advantage of multiple processors, especially quad Core (intel came out with last week, and AMD is out in January) but you will see the aps in the near future.
the quad core is 2 Core 2 Duo on 1 chip, Pentium D is two cores, 1 die (QX is 2 dies side by side) - kinda faking quad core
But when one is handling massive number crunching the other can take over all of the grfx tasks...speeding up everything almost making it 2x as fast theoretically

it has 2 processors in one unit processor and not that if one is not working the other one takes charge but it makes the machine faster and also have the ability to do multi processing tasks

It has two processors. Both of them work at the same time. Its more like "two heads are better than one"

"Pentium D" has two core processors.... thats why its called so.
For the analogy..... rather than kidneys think about brain... it has two halves and you can not live with a single half functioning.... :)

no its sitll 1 piece of hardware - any surge by electricity or overheating will kill them both (it).
