Yes, boys as young as 2 or 3 "discover" on their own how to pleasure themselves. Just make sure he knows it is to be done alone in the privacy of his room

Actually, yes. It is normal for children of all ages to masturbate. Though most do not realize that they are doing it. And according to Discover Magazine, babies even masturbate in the womb. In younger children this is most commonly seen as the child will hug closely a pillow or stuffed animal and rock back in forth. They usually do not know what they are doing, just that it feels good and is soothing.

A study at the University of Arkansas shows that people actually masturbate more often between the ages of 3 and 5 then they do as adults.

Masturbation among children is very common, and how you handle it is a personal choice as a parent. The Center for Effective Parenting recommends that you ignore it in the younger ages, and encourage the child to restrict themselves to when they are in private (in the bedroom or bathroom) when they are older.

It IS normal for a 9 year old to maturbate. How you choose to react is totally up to you as a parent. Some people feel that masturbation is a natural part of life, others feel it's a sin against God and never ok.

Possibly. According to Sigmund Freud's psychosexual theory, the phallic stage, during which the child's pleasure focuses on the gentials, is from ages 3-6. Age 6 to puberty is the latency stage, during which the child represses sexual interest until puberty. However, that is not an exact blueprint of all children. If the child has figured out that it feels good, then they might do it, no matter the age. It's not weird, or gross...its a normal part of being human. Things make you feel pleasure, you continue to do them. Things cause you pain, you avoid them.

It has been reported that children of all ages begin to masturbate once they discover that they can get a pleasurable feeling form it. They don't however associate it with being sexual until the usually reach adolescence. Read up on the wikipedia article.

No, you are too young to masturbate. I think you need doctor attention.

It is possible, but not really normal, most kids don't get into this habbit until about 12 - 14. I would check into who this child has been hanging around with. Or they could just be an early starter.
