People hate because they are afraid of things they don't know much about. The Church goes against its own preachings by hating gays. Christianity says to love others, even if they are "sinners." You can argue about the nature of sin, but nowhere in the bible does it say "Good Christians bully gays." In fact, Jesus defends sinners as being only human and by saying,"He who throws the first stone..." Some Christians argue that gays are sinful, but few know what sodomy traditionally means. In biblical times, any sex that was done for just pleasure and not to make babies was viewed as a distraction to pleasing God and worshipping Him. So, naturally, gays were sinful for "having sex for fun." Nowadays, though, healthy relationships are driven by "fun sex", not the urge to make babies. Sexual attraction and a healthy sex life with your lover, not the need to make babies, is what primarily drives a healthy relationship of any kind! So in essence, what causes religiously-rooted homophobia is a misinterpretation of the bible. The other kind of homophobia is driven by people insecure in their own sexuality, and therefore need to bully others in order to feel powerful.
Either way. I think your friend is just trying to find himself, so give him time.

I don't hate gays, in fact I have some friends who are. I think people are afraid of what they don't understand. There's an old saying "don't judge a man before you walk a mile in his shoe's. I not particularly found of gay's.. but that' because I guess I don't understand them. Sadly, ignorance of anything can lead lead to fear, than anger, than hate. People should be more open minded about things.

Straight guys who hate gays are scared that if they let themselves be seduced by a gay man that they will actually enjoy it and start to question their sexual identity.

Straight women who hate gay men are afraid we will steal their boyfriends and husbands away from them.

Homophobia is born out of these two insecurities....

It is that people confuse their own hatred of the person with the hatred of the person's ways. It is simply a case of the masses hating others who they view as different from themselves, especially if others ways conflict with the morals of the masses.
