In a nutshell,

Continental philosophy deals with the the discourse after Kant-- pertaining to idealism, phenomenology, sauseurean lingustics, existentialism, marxism

Whereeas analyitc philosophy is an ofshoot of logical positivism, a school that originated in the Vienna Circle and brought to flourish in England. Their strict realist assumptions allowed them to pursue logical entailment, language and metaphysics (unwittingly) on a scientific path that is abrasive to elements of the continental movement which is often critical of 'science'.

The 'division' is quite arbitrary, but stylistically it's is noticeable.

First off: Continent as used in the context refers to continental Europe, supposed to be the seat of philosophy itself (later literature will disprove this as witnessed by Buddhism and other African and Asian philosophical thoughts). Continental philosophy would therefore refer to all schools of thoughts in philosophy that cover Thales, Anaximander, Plato, Socrates and all in Europe.

Analytical philosophy include all of those philosophers during the so-called "Age of Reason" or "Enlightenment" which are distinctively from the 18th Century philosophers and onwards.

Many of the later and latter philosophers in Continental Europe joined the "age of reason" group yet are not wholly the pack of the analytical philosophers. It is just that "they were the ones who were published" and were therefore renown. There were other philosophers in Asia, Africa and even in the Americas that very few would dare acknowledge as such and Thoreau is one.
