My last pap test, the nurse told me, came back with abnormal cells. What can this mean? I had a friend who had cervical cancer at age 18. I am 17 and VERY worried. I had a baby earlier this year and had difficulties after the birth. There was talk of a historectamy (horrible spelling i bet). I just want to know what to expect tomorrow at my follow up exam. Good and bad.

It will depend on whether you have the type of hpv cells that cause cancer. Some hpv cells do not cause cancer. I dont know what they told you when you gave birth, but they may have discovered the cells that do cause cancer. If that is the case, the dr. will tell you the process of what you will need to do.

You will need to be responsible about the people that you have sex with in the future. HPV can be passed on even if you do use condoms. You can even give it to your children.

Good luck to you.

Don't be scared. I have always had normal pap test (20yrs old) and just 2 months ago I had abnormal bleeding so they did a coloscopy right then, I didn't know what they were going to do and it all happened so fast I didn't have time to worry about it. but they took 2 biopsies, one was the cause for my bleeding and that hurt a little, but they then saw a white spot which usually only shows up on abnormal cells and when they took the biopsy of that I didn't even feel it. It came back cancer free and now I have to back in 6 months to re check my pap smear. so don't worry to much

Abnormal pap tests are common and usually it's nothing bad. Do whatever follow-up tests your doctor recommends and wait for the results before allowing any panic.

You should follow up on this, but since in most cases it turns out to be no problem, don't start worrying yet. :o)

Best Wishes,

Sue
