Domain Name is the name of any website.
Example, when you say you have opened www.yahoo.dom, you mean to say that you have opened the domain named www.yahoo.com
Simple as that.

In web-world, the simplest analogy: a folder/a directory someplace on a server and named "somethingororther.com" so when you type it in your browser, it hits that folder wherever it is and finds in it a page called "index.html" or so and shows it to you.
