It's actually better for her to smoke and breastfeed than it is for her to smoke and formula feed. Breastfeeding will help to counter some of the bad effects of smoking for her baby.
She should try to not smoke around the baby. She should go outside. She should have a special coat or sweater she wears over her clothes so she doesn't bring so much of the scent back inside with her.
If she smokes too much, it can damage her letdown response and make breastfeeding more difficult. Moms who smoke a lot may have supply problems.
It's also important for her to consider the fact that choosing to smoke makes it more likely for her child to grow up to be the smoker. (Not because of breastfeeding.....just because of growing up in a home with a smoker.) She should think about the habits and lifestyle she wants to model for her child.
Also, her kids need a mom who is alive and healthy.

The poisons and carcinogens stick to the skin and clothes of the mother (and may diffuse through the milk or on contact with the baby).
This is assuming she isn't smoking while breastfeeding or while in the same room as the baby. Then the baby is at even greater risk: respiratory problems, SIDS, mutations (and thus cancer), retardation, ADHD, etc. Plus plenty of other diseases/problems related to cigarette smoke.
If she loves her children, she would want to live longer for them. Smoking is an extremely addictive habit. WIth intense withdrawal symptoms. But whatever reason the addicted person may dream up, doesn't counter the truth that it's not good for the baby. If she doesn't care for herself, at least she should think of her child.
The people who think, "I smoked and my child turned out OK," how do you know how your kids could have turned out better than the "OK" that you think they are? Ugh, it's disgusting the half-baked rationalizations that nicotine addiction makes you think of.

Smoking is bad, but I have read that smoking and breastfeeding is better than formula anyway. No one cigarette will not do any harm. As long as you aren't smoking inside or near the baby.

Smoking decreases milk supply. See web site listed below. Also, children who live in homes where the adults smoke have 5 times the rate of upper respiratory illnesses of children in homes where no one smokes. There are also many other articles avail...just do a web search for 'breast feeding, smoking".

Other than the obvious health problems that come about from smoking and second hand smoke exposure, smoking can interfere with the milk letdown reflex and can lessen milk supply. Also mothers who smoke have less iodine in their breastmilk than non-smoking mothers.
While ideally your friend should quit smoking for the benefit of her own health and the health of her baby, it is still better to breastfeed and smoke than it is to formula feed and smoke.

Just smelling the second hand smoke is bad for the baby. It could develope lung problems and asthma.
I know that food the mother eats, affects her milk, so why wouldn't cigarette smoke do the same thing?
Who wants their baby smelling like a smoke pipe anyway!!

A breastfeeding Mother and her Child share everything the Mother takes into her body (except dad). If she drinks, her infant drinks, if she smokes her infant smokes.
Smoking is something Her body has adjusted to, her infant is a brand new page. His/her body may be "poisoned" by that which has ne effect at all on Mom.

Find pictures of what cigarette does to lungs in general and articles on second hand smoking, Tell her she will be feeding contaminated milk to her newborn. And, is giving him a dose of nicotine through fluid, it is harmful to a child. Why did she get pregnant if she wasn't going to be a responsible mother.
