its a five test series squeezed into 7 weeks. as shown by mcgrath foot injury and pontings bacvk injury, our players are old and require careful management, esp. the bowlers. enforcing follow on causes bowlers to bowl 2 innings in a row, tiring them out too much in the first match. the next test starts in only 3 days.
it would of been a miricle for them bat 2 days after scoring only 157 in first innings. australia were taking only a small chance.

It was a strange decision taken by Ricky Ponting not to enforce follow-on and bat again, which no other cricket captain in the world would have been done. Though the reason attributed to the above decision was that Ponting wanted to give enough rest to his bowlers, I dont think that explanation will justify his decision. Any way by not enforcing the follow-on, he did a favour to England of saving them from the embarrassment of innings defeat.

Ricky Ponting was looking after number 1, his team. And also, rubbing the English teams noses in it. Australia are an average team without McGrath, so the longer he can rest between innings, the better chance the ozzies have of winning.

Yeah I think with ammount of overs bowled they a) wanted a bit of a rest, and
b) knew there was still enough time to bowl England out aagin. Plus with over three days left to play, they knew batting for a couple of sessions could allow them to generate such a big lead it would be a humilitaing loss for England.

Ponting was trying to take the "P". Only time will tell if he has done enough to gee up our lads the same way as he did last year. Let us hope so. We were on the rack and there for the taking, had he behaved like a normal cricket captain.

So they could rest their bowlers (McGrath especially as he is getting towards the end of his career and has just come back from injury)
