We have a gas fireplace, and our house has high celings where I think we loose a lot of heat. I heard if you turn on the celing fan to a low setting it will help push the heat back down to the floor. Does that really work, and does it need to be set clock-wise, or ccw?

yes, during winter months, for a valted ceiling, if you run your ceiling fan normally it will push the heated air back down. The downside of this is that, of course, it will create a breeze that may make you feel chilly.

Running a fan in reverse (generally counter clock wise) will mix the air without creating a downdraft breeze, but this is not quite as effective at getting warm air back down to ground level.

Check your ceiling fan to see if it has a switch on it that reverse the way that it turns when using it to cool the house. I did not discover this switch until last year and it does indeed blow the hot air from the ceiling back down into the room. It also helped save money on the gas bill when I did this. Hope this information helps.

Yes it helps especially with vaulted ceilings. Set the fan in reverse. It will bring up cool air to be warmed and push the warm air down the sides of the wall so there is no hot blast in the center of the room.

Hot air rises. Cool air drops. By running the fan, you are circulating the hot air that would otherwise just stay in the ceiling. That would be counter clock wise. It does make a difference in my house. I have 14 foot ceilings in some areas.

Yes it dose help.

I had a pot belly stove in my old A-frame house.
the heat would just go straight up to the high pitched roof.
I use to turn on the ceiling fans to circulate the heat in the room.
Normally i put the fans on the normal setting as i wanted to blow the air down from the roof onto the floor.

It was amazing how much wood we would save over winter.

Yes it does. Why? Because notice when a helicopters rotors spin, it pushes dust and stuff downwards and away from it - same with a fan.
