similarly what will be the difference in buying 1.6 ghz processor and 1.7 ghz processor whichone is better?

512 is twice as much memory. Everything will run faster with more memory. If you are going to have a new machine, with XP, you should have 512 meg ram. You will not see the difference between a 1.6 gig processor and a 1.7. As a matter of fact, if you take the 1.6 gig machine, and put 1 gig ram in it, it will be a lot faster machine than the 1.7 gig machine with 512 mb ram.

512 ram is the minimum nowadays for a computer - anything less will be extremely slow! It's better to have at least 1 gig, though. As for the processor question, there is very little difference between two identical processors that are either 1.6 or 1.7. Most people won't notice the difference at all.

512 MB RAM is obviously better that the 256 one 'cause you get better boot up time and processes running much faster.
About the 1.6 GHz and the 1.7 GHz, there's absolutely no difference if u wanna use it for normal applications.
It might be a slight faster if u wanna perform high end applications on MATLAB and other stuff like that, otherwise its all the same.
Its just a sales Gimmick thats all.

256RAM is a lot and unless you plan to run some very heavy programs I don't think you will see a lot of difference. Check the price, if it is only a little bit more buy the one with 512RAM. Also you could ask if the one with 256 could be upgraded. Sometimes the tech can swap memory for you for only a little bit of cash.
You will not see any difference between teh 1.6GHZ and a 1.7GHZ. You might see a difference between 1.6GHZ and a 1.0GHZ. Shooey my first IBM had a 133MHZ the 1.6GHZ is 1,000 times faster...

well u should buy 512 mb ram with a 1.7ghz processor because its better in performance but the price of laptop will be little more than that of 1.6ghz

The answer is in your question, 2x more ram, faster access to applications etc.. the more ram you have the better you pc/laptop will run. As for the cpu you will not even notice the difference its such a small increase!

In this case, BIGGER is better!
To quote Tim Allen on Tool Time: "More Power', errrgh errrgh errrgh, is always better!"
256mb is half of 512mb. 512mb is half of 1GB. So more will do allot better, especially with a laptop. Also same goes for processors, the bigger the number, the faster it is. 1.7ghz is the better choise.

256 ram, is way behind, 512, is for basic applications, email, multi tasking, 1gb is for higher applications ---> Anything higher, is for tons of applications open at one time without slowing down your computer.
