The Middle East is about Oil! Our allies are Israel, Turkey, and Egypt, and Kuwait. Neutral are Jordan, Lebanon,Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, the Arab Emirates. Hostile are Iraq?, Iran, Syria, and probably Afghanistan, though we have installed a government there now friendly to us,but it probably will not last. Most of those friendly to us are on our payroll like Israel and Egypt. Because we are so dependent on the oil, and are afraid of losing control of it, we are acting out of fear. We are trying bully the region into being our friends. That never works. As of now, most all the people on the street hate us for what we are doing. I think the biggest threat is our own policy of force. No one likes to be forced, and these are an ancient and proud people. Our present government says the threats are Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Afghanistan. If you would like to know more, and I suggest you do as that part of the world will continue to influence your daily life, I would read what you can, watch our news, and use the Internet. One excellent source of the Arab view of the news is Al Jazeera - see the link below. I hope that helps

A main country is Saudi Arabia. It has the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. All Muslims must make a pilgrimage there at least once in their life. Saudi has a king and royal family. It is Sunni sect of Islam, more specifically it has propagated the Wahhabis, a conservative sect, from which we have Osama Bin Laden. Saudi Wahabbis have paid for madrassa schools everywhere they are accepted (including the US & Europe).
Saudi Arabia has allied with the US to get rid of the communist, godless Soviet Union and to free Afghanistan in the 80s/90s.
The Saudis act for themselves only.

There is Iran, formerly Persia. It used to have Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi who was an ally of the US and England. He was very tough on his people. He was overthrown in 1979 by the Ayatollah Kholmeini, who was a conservative Shiite Muslim Cleric who hates the West, and called the US the Great Satan.
The government of Iran is still following in Kholmeini's footsteps.
Iran has just received protective missiles from Russia. It is also making a nuclear bomb.

Iraq had been ruled by Saddam Hussein since the 1950s or so. Saddam was a member of the Baathist Party, a communist nationalist party. Saddam is Sunni, not Wahhabi. His government was secular, meaning not having direct religious influence in the government. The majority of Iraqis are Shiite.
There are also ethnic Kurds and Chaldean Christians in Iraq.
The elected government is based on a mixture of the different ethnic groups in Iraq. The new goverment has not been able to get control of the country. Some of the biggest troubles in Baghdad come from the Shiite upstart Cleric Al Sadr. He is backed by Iran. As soon as Saddam was toppled, Al Sadr killed a prominent Shiite cleric and tried to assassinate Al Sistani, who is the top Shiite cleric by family and teaching. Al Sadr has been working to provoke a civil war by using his Madhi Brigade to abduct and kill Sunnis. The Sunnis include many who had been in the former Saddam regime and are bloodthirsty brutes and quite willing to fight. Neither group cares who gets in the cross fire.

There is Syria, ruled by another Baathist, Bashar Assad. This is another brutal dictatorship. Syria works with Iran to undermine other countries in the area through its Nazi trained security/spy agency. It allows terroist groups to have store fronts on the main street of their capital, Damascusand arm openly. Syria is accused of the assiassination of several Lebanese cabinet ministers in recent years and those problems are leading to an extreme problem in Lebanon.

Lebanon is right above/north of Israel. Hezbollah, the Shiite, Iran backed terrorist group has fired missiles from Lebanon to Israel
and kidnapped Israeli soldiers, causing Israel to enter Lebanon and bomb areas where missiles have come from. Hezbollah has been paying Shiite families to move into the areas destroyed by Israel.

The only allies we have in the Middle East are the disenfranchised groups like the Kurds, and the Christians of Lebanon.

Lebanon and Iraq are being used by Shiites and Sunnis as they fight for dominance of the Muslim world. Darfur in Sudan is a country where conservative Sunnis are using genocide to rid the southern part of the country of blacks, Christian, Muslim or traditional beliefs, they are all murdered.

There is Pakistan, wheere Bin Laden and the Taliban are allowed to take cover. the President, Mushareff, watches out for his own interest. pakistan has a nuclear bomb and has sold that technology to North Korea, through their top physicist.

Afghanistan is ruled by a pro-western president who has no power outside the capital. The country side is still ruled by rival warlords.
