The ones that I use in testing precious stones are :-
1) Bromoform - Density of 2.90 and can be diluted with toluol.
2) Acetylene tetrabromide - D. = 2.95 can be diluted with toluol.
3) Sonstadt's solution. Saturated solution of potassium mercuric iodide in water D. = 3.18 can be diluted with water.
4)Klein's solution. Saturated solution of cadmium boro-tungstate in water D. = 3.28 can be diluted with water.
5) Methylene iodide (CH2I2) D = 3.32 can be diluted with toluol
6) Rohrbach's solution Saturated Barium mercuric iodide in water D.= 3.58
7)Methylene iodide with dissolved iodine and iodoform D = 3.6
8) Clerici's solution Saturated solution of thallium manolate and thallium formate in water D = 4.15 can be diluted with water.

All of these liquids are POISON and most give off noxious fumes so they must be handled with great care.
They are also, I regret to say very expensive.

Apparently sodium polytungstate's a pretty good heavy liquid (was just looking up it's chemistry earlier: http://www.geoliquids.com/geo_pdfs/msds_sp.pdf) - and it's the one I'm probably going to be using later on in the week (or when I get round to it...) to separate out some heavy minerals from the lighter quartz and stuff. Very expensive though, so I hear... but reusable, at least!
