It is still 8 months away for me but I am freaking out.

1) Don't freak out. A defense is generally a conversation about your work. And who knows more about YOUR work than you?

2) Be prepared to show familiarity with the relevant literature in the field. Know the sources on your bibliography, and make sure you did not neglect any critical sources.

3) Be prepared to defend your methodology. Why did you choose the theorists and methods that you did? Be clear on this, and be prepared to talk about it.

4) Remember that your advisor is your best resource. S/he is supposed to guide you through the process, making sure that you've covered the literature and that you're using an acceptable method. S/he is also supposed to make sure that your defense is not scheduled until your thesis is ready, and you are prepared. Also, if things get sticky in the defense, s/he should act as your ally, and help you negotiate tough questions.

Best wishes to you!
