My room gets a little chilly at night and I was wondering if it safe to cover the mouse and hamster cages at night for some (hopefully) added warmth. It's nothing big..just some fleece I bought at WalMart. I know I'd have to leave it open a little for some ventilation. But is it okay? It won't hurt them or anything, will it? And what if they start chewing on the blankets through the bars?

That is a great idea and it won't hurt the animals. They will still have the proper ventilation and be warm throughout the night. It's okay if they start chewing on the blankets, it won't hurt them since all they would be doing is taking the material they chew off and making it into a nesting material.

I actually recomend adding more shavings, a couple of Toilet Paper tubes, and some balled cotton... the animals can keep themselves warm enough without added help... they just need the materials... covering the cage will not do that much to help them because their bodies are not large enough compared to the space around them... tighter smaller burrows work better for tiny animals.

It's Okay to do this but you are right they will start chewing the blanket through the bars.

you can cover the cage, it wont hurt them..but they may have a little extra bedding in the cage by morning..lol..usually the bedding you have is sufficient, i bought my daughters hamster a little igloo, he loves it and it stays pretty warm, especially when he puts all his bedding in it..

I think when they burrow into the cedar shavings or whatever that should be warm enough.
