In most books and movies, the dragon is a senseless killing machine with hords of treasure. I've seen maybe 2 movies and a book or two that doesn't negate them as evil but on the side with humanity. Ergon is the first actual book I've seen in a long time, so why is it they are always evil and senseless?

Western dragons are thought to be evil, mainly by knights, informed to kill these beasts. Who were not that friendly mind you I wouldn’t be that friendly if some knight came crashing into my home to kill me. Plus a lot of the beliefs were changed back when Christianity started spreading though the world. People were informed this beast was evil and needed to be destroyed.

Where as the Eastern dragons treasured and are more luck dragons or honored and bring hope and good fortune.
They are the angels of the Orient. Instead of being hated, they are loved and worshipped.

Read the Dragon Lance books my Margrett Wise and Tracy Hickman. They are AWESOME books and there are many diffiernt types of Dragons of all different colors. Some are very wise and benevolent and others are greedy and selfish. Some of them even have the ability to shapeshift into human form. That's where I developed my Love for Dragons. They're just misunderstood and have been typecast I guess. They're a popular creature in the fantasy world and somebodys gotta be the bad guy. Plus Dragons make the story more interesting, even if they are bad. It just makes me sad that they always get killed. By some human no less. In my opinion there's noway one person can kill a dragon they're to massive and powerfull.

Dragons are often thought of as large, scaly beasties, breathing fire down on the poor hapless villages. Remember the heroic Knight? Where would he be without a Dragon to slay and a maiden to rescue? Dragons have to be depicted as evil, to make the Heroes of the stories more...Heroic! Just remember, not all Dragons are thought of this way, the Chinese Dragon is a good example. But, for this particular question, I think they are evil and sinister to make a good story better.

That is true in European style depictins of dragons. Part of that is the fact that dragons have such a reptillian appearance and people are conditioned to believe that things of a reptillian nature are evil (like the sepent in the Garden of Eden).

In Chinese and other Asian cultures dragons are not protrayed as inherantly evil (although evil dragons do esixt in those cultures). Dragons are consicdered to be mostly benevolent and lucky in those cultures. They are creatures possessed of great power and wisdom and are often consulted in the mythos by those that are seeking knowledge, skill or power.

For the same reason that snakes, or scorpions, etc are considered evil. People fear what they do not understand, and most people do not understand the necessity of the yin and yang in the world-that there is purpose for everything. Good and evil, male and female, water and fire are all part of a balance. It is essential that one exists for the other to be a reality as well.
Anything that is powerful and commands respect is negated by many out of ignorance, fear, or misunderstanding.

It depends on what you believe a dragon to be.
To the Europeans, they inherited their dragons from the Norse, for whom dragons were either Giantish, non-aligned powers of Midgard, or descendants of Loki, when they weren't humans who succumbed to a greed-punishing curse.

To the Chinese the were memories of beings that were longer-lived and more powerful than humans, who had ruled them for several thousand years, or they were descendants of those who had become anchored to the Earth, and were seen as 'out of balance' in regards to the powers of Yin and Yang.

In any case, they are creatures of power, with their own selfish agenda-s. The Roman church could not have found a better public symbol for their variety of 'evil', ie disobedience and selfishness.

the modern mythos of the dragon came from Christian knights that were at war in egypt and saw the Nile Crocodile. this is where the lizard like apearence and the sensless killing part came from.

after that the dragon became the stuff of legend and for a virtous knight to show his honor he needed a beast of great evil to kill.
dragons got bigger and badder over the years. untill we ended up with what we have today.

The Antichrist will be a human born of devil. there'll be many Antichrist's who're hostile to God although the their destiny has already been decreed by Christ's victory at Calvary. devil is a vanquished foe as is his military of followers. They comprehend they face a very last destruction yet are wanting to make life for human beings as depressing as attainable by sowing lies and deceit about the actuality of God's love for each body human beings. you could imagine that circumstances are problematical / undesirable now, yet a lot worse is to come back.
