they were in there homeland so it made it easier to get supply's and reinforcements where the British had to wait for a ship to come from england to get that, plus the british had to worry about every tom dick and harry taking pot shots at them

They were here, fighting for their homeland. The Brits were away from their homes, just fighting for a paycheck. Gee, it's sort of like, oh let's see, uh Americans fighting in Korea, Americans fighting in Viet Nam, Americans fighting in Afganistan, Americans fighting in Iraq. Get the point? Who won all those wars?

certainly by knowing the lay of the land, they could force the Brits into untenable positions, where the fighting was advantageous to the US forces
