I'm thirty and don't know what you're talking about.

When writing an essay never assume the reader knows what you're talking about. Explain what pointe is and give examples. Pointe is a form of ballet where dancers perform mostly on their toes. Pointe can be seen in The Nutcracker, etc ...

You might want to include in your essay a short explaination of what pointe is, and perhaps it would also be wise to include a picture of a dancer en pointe in your presentaion.
And even if your teacher does know what dancing en pointe is, s/he may be the one giving you the grade, but if you're going to present it before the class, the essay is really for your fellow students and you, not your teacher.

If you describe what getting en pointe is and why it's important, then he'll both know what it is, and why it matters to you. Education should work both ways; it's OK for students to teach teachers once in awhile. Write it up, with a good sound explanation.
P.S. I'm a middle-aged guy too, and have no idea what en pointe is...and I've even been to the ballet once!

He could, but there's a good chance he won't especially if he's not familiar with ballet terms. Maybe write that part of the paper as you've planned to, but add an illustration of "en pointe" so he can (please forgive me) get the point. {GROAN} And I did actually know what the term meant.
Anyway, I just asked my 10 year old daughter what it would mean if in the world of dance I mentioned "pointe" what would it mean? Her answer was "Point your toe". Using her as a sample, I'd really not count on your teacher knowing it without a little help.
Good luck on your paper!

You could insert a picture into your essay. Then there is no way he wouldn't understand what your are talking about. Just write "en pointe" (see picture below) or something like that. Just make sure to credit the picture to it's source, even if it was taken by your best friend's mom.

there's no way to know for sure, he should know but there's no guarantee. just put in a quick description like "I am hoping that one day I will be able to dance en pointe, that is, on the tips of my toes using special supportive pointe shoes." or something. (obviously not that exact sentence because it's really bad, but it's 2 AM where I live so I'm uninspired right now).

well, i would assume most other dancers would know but i don't think your phys-ed teacher would know, so you might want to specify that in your answers. most of my friends who don't dance have no clue what en pointe is and neither does my phys-ed teacher.

I would be s/he knows. It's not rocket science and most people have seen The Nutcracker ad nauseam.
My sis wanted to be a ballerina and being "on pointe" wrecked her feet. I might be a Trog but I wouldn't do that to myself for anything. Jazz is much more entertaining anyway.

If he doesn't know then he should find out before marking your essay.
And this is from a middle aged male with no interest at all in ballet

Should. He does have a college degree. On the other hand, I'm surprised every day about how little some folks know.
