To celebrate Christ's birth. NOT to buy presents and all the media and materialistic trappings that go with it.
My favorite part of Christmas is midnight mass. We do put up a tree - we do NOT buy expensive gifts for one another. We make a donation to charity instead. The Wisemen didn't sit down in the desert and exchange gifts from Walmart and Bestbuy, etc...lol..they brought their gifts to Christ. One way to do that is to donate to a charity of your choice.

Christmas is the spirit of giving. If you take it from a purely christian prospective Christmas is when as it says in john 3:16 God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son. So mankind's take this time of year to give. If we come from a commercial point of view or to put it less cynically, man's prospective Santa Clause the man in the red suit that rides around and gives people stuff. Christmas is the spirit of giving and love of your fellow man and woman

Jesus is the reason for Christmas even though his birth wasn't in december. It a time to show love for each other and get lots of warm fuzzies from friends and family. Like He loves us.

To me, in a religious sense, it means remembering/celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, and what it meant to the world.

Christmas means the gift of giving, and spending time with your family. And gratitude for what you get and what you give.
