It depends on the amount of force you want to use on the rock and how much work you are wanting to do. If you have a fairly large rock, the best choice is to have a short lever on a crane that allows you to pick up the rock. However, if you are doing this by hand and have no machinery, a longer lever is more inclined to help you out. Being an object such as a piece of wood, that would be a very wise choice, make sure you have placed something, such a rock in the middle to create a point of leverage, otherwise, you will be caught in a rock and a hard place (Namely, the ground). The more distance from you to the rock via the board, the less force required to move the rock. But the more distance you need to move the lever down to the ground. longer and shorter are relative terms (not very definitive) but a longer lever will, generally, allow one to lift more weight.

A longer level, the farther away the point that the force is applied to is from the pivot point the less force can be applied. Basicaly the father you are away from the axis the small amount of force is needed.
