Frivolous use of the word gay meaning using the word with out seriousness. Well, I don't necessarily like when it's used in the weird or stupid context because the word easily be misunderstood. Using the word in that context makes it a negative word because the word stupid and weird are negative words as well. No one wants to be associated with a negative word. That's why when I use that word I'm careful with what text I put it in. Using the word GAY as a negative word opens the door for acceptance of using GAY PEOPLE in negative context. That's not acceptable. We all are humans. Nobody wants negativity with their sexual orientation. So why give a word power in a negative context? It's hateful if you do.

"gay" was a word commonly used when i was growing up when some one was acting stupid or weird.... i still use it that way. Now there is the added homosexual aspect put onto it these days, but i think the weird and stupid is still fitting. i haven't noticed that the word 'gay' is being used frivolously, but if it is... so what it is a word. I have noticed the words uh, um, actually and some other tiresome words used much more frequently. sometimes opening a dictionary will enlighten you to all the other definitions that one little word can mean. it's always changing.

I hate to be all uppity intellectual like, but the correct term is 'pejorative.' Like when people say 'What a rotten movie! It was sooo gay.'
It bothers me depending on who's saying it I guess. Usually though it's just stereotypical straight boys in baseball caps that show zero emotion and feeling, I have no idea what women see in those type of men since masculinity is a passion and an action but they just sit there all rigid like thinking it's so cool for them to act like nothing bothers them. BORING.
Of course I wouldn't ever make a phrase up like 'that's so straight.' *rolls eyes* I guess it's just one of the disadvantages of being a minority. We're just outnumbered by bud lite drinkin, Red Wings sweatshirt wearing MEDIOCRE AMERICANS.

It is very insulting and derogatory. The workplace is one of the worst environments to hear this type of thing. Offically, corporations may be dead set against making fun of any group, but it goes on all of the time among small groups of workers, especially on breaks and also outside the earshot of supervisors.

If I'm saying in a bad way "like oh that's so gay" well then I don't really give a crap if I am offending anyone.

all though i am guilty of using it lightly, i have really tried to stop because i realized how offensive it could be to a lot of people. i hate it when other people use it lightly, because gay has come to be (well, always has been) synonymous with stupid or wrong or bad. i'm straight, but i completely disagree with that.

Well that sure made me chuckle. I have several gay friends who are frivolous, however they certainly can hold their own when they need to. I guess what I think is that this is a frivolous question.

Do you mean saying like "Oh that's so gay!"? I dont mind it, I use it myself a lot. Dont care if someone else uses it either because its never used really for anything bad but something silly or tacky... kinda like us ;)
