I have a netgear wireless router. Connections are made both via wifi and wired connection and both experience momentary internet dropping every few minutes. The drops are only for a few seconds and then the connection reestablishes itself. We've tried replacing the router and the cable wires to no avail. What would cause this to happen and how can i fix it?

This is happening to all 4 computers on the network. The router also occasionally disappears from the available wifi and must be reset. The lag problem can also be fixed by resetting the wifi on the computer. The lag also hits wired connecections.

The wiring in the building might be old.I would call the cable or Telephone guy which ever comes first and have them check the cabling in the building for attenuation. The phone CO owns the cabling outside of the house or apt called a CSU/DSU uses a RJ 48 connected to the Router and then the switch. From that point on you are renting the service line that is connected to your residence. So they need to come out and check the wiring.......

Have you tried to bypass the router and connect the computer straight to the modem. If you have already replaced the router then it might be problem with your modem. What modem are you using?
Are you using a DSL or Cable connection?

Someone near you has recently set up a wireless router that is transmitting on the same channel as yours and is conflicting with your signal. Log back into your router and change the channel on the wireless tab by several channels. You may have to do this a couple of times to find a channel no one near you is on.

An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz

I had the same problem
I use dell laptops and dlink router.
the connection would stay for sometime, then get disconnected. i have to either manually click connect again, or it will come back in few mins.

here is what i did to solve the problem:
nothing.
i continued to use the unsecured connection for few days
and the connection got established for a long run by itself. now it stays connected for days together.

btw i used windows wireless network manager and not any other private software.

Check lease time for LAN's DHCP in routers interface. Another possible solutions:
-have you tried resetting it and reconfiguring from scratch?
-There is a java script based exploit which allows to scan LAN (probably little chances its it anyway thought will mention it – more details in audition # 52 from this page:
