If you are unable to love who you are (self) then you will not be able to pass this emotion along to others. This all ties in with self respect and self esteem. For example; if your life or the way you live it, is such a chaotic mess and you have nothing but angst about living the way you do; you will be unable to show anyone else your true feelings for them. I believe you may have love for someone but without being happy with whom you are, it will be nearly impossible for you to properly express the way you feel towards others. Persons that are depressed or have other anxiety issues, have difficulty expressing love for anything, much less another person. You may well know in your heart the way you feel. However; expressing that emotion is much more difficult if you can not even show yourself the love and respect you DESERVE.
Sincerely,
MCPO West USN (Ret.)

The expression is a way of expressing empathy. To know and be familiar yourself in the times of deep and powerful emotions & being able to relate to others in good or bad times. It is this knowing and understanding that you're able to connect with one another in deeper ways.
Perhaps one day you'll know the meaning of the words: "A Tempered Faith"

My take on it is that if you don't love yourself there is a reason - that you were unloved as a child, and never learned about love and loving. That would leave you with alot of anger and neediness - and it is hard to love truly and unconditionally if you are an angry needy person. Any love another gives to you will always be doubted until you learn to accept and love your self.

!If you love yourself you know what love is, feels like, and live from that energy. You don't seem to know what it looks like to love yourself, and that means you are disconnected somehow from love. So you can do things for yourself, protect yourself, nurture yourself, stand up for yourself etc, like you would for someone you love dearly. You will begin to feel love, or self-esteem, that like a seed will grow if you water it. Then you can have a depth of love for others. My son says: tell yourself to believe in yourself :) Maybe see a counselor?

If you love yourself, you think well of yourself even when you consider your flaws. You are happy in your own space.
So if you can be happy on your own (love yourself), then you can love another...i guess, easier. There will be no personal hangups to get in the way of you opening up to another person.
I think the greater your love for yourself, the more open and loving you can be.

to me, its that if you don't even love yourself, how much do you know about love and how to love? Only people that love themselves, cherish themselves and that have experienced love will be able to love others in a more passionate way... hope im right =)

its very simple and it says what it means......you can't and won't be able to love someone for them till you can love yourself for who you are.
meaning until you are comfortable with who you are, what you are, your limitations and expectations....you can't love nor see the same in others.
not loving yourself will cause all your relationships, even friend relationships to be rough, short or violent.

It's easiest to love yourself, so if you can't do that you can't do the harder thing of loving someone else
