I've noticed this as well and I rarely have sex while on my period. I don't have an answer for you, but it may just be because we are tender from cramps or things like that.

It should not be painful to have sex during your period (or ever, for that matter). In fact, many women report that it feels better. There is more lubrication and orgasm can actually help reduce any cramping you may feel. Additionally, the extra hormones running around in your system may cause you to feel more turned on. Maybe you are a little tense even though you think you're OK with it? Try using an additional lubricant like KY and see if that helps.

Because when you have an orgasm with a tampon in there, the contracting walls surround it and that's what hurts. That's what happens with me.
