A friend of mine (who has no permanent address or contact information) has not been seen or heard from for a worrisome amount of time. It is a legitimate fear of his mutual friends (myself included) that he may have died while hitchhiking or camping during such travel. Is there some way for me to get a list or contact information for organizations that handle lists of unidentified people who were found dead recently? Perhaps a list of drifters and homeless who have died but remain unidentified?

The local police or coroner should have a list of 'John Doe''s found in the area. Contact the police office there, or the coroner, or maybe the hospitals. You might also check with groups that provide housing for homeless people, shelters and such, and ask them if they've seen him. You could leave messages for him at those places. If you are familiar with where he normally goes hiking, get together a search party and go look for him and ask anyone you pass if they know of him.

Go to the police with your information. They can access data files in very little time. It would also help if you have a picture of this person.
Do you have any idea of how to contact your friend's relatives? If not, think back on where he may have lived --try asking a neighbor in his former neighborhood if they know how to contact his family.

You would have to contact the local law enforcement in the area where you think he may have been hiking. Also check any surrounding towns.

If you know his family ask them to file a missing persons report.

Was his name John Doe? Because if he is unidentified that's the only name you are going to find on any list of UNidentified Dead. It doesn't matter where you check.

If they are unidentified, then they don't know who the person is.
What kind of list could they possibly make without knowing who the person is?
