do have meta tags, proper HTML scripts, good layout, good flow and ease of use.

dont' use more than 2 font types, don't make each page different layout, don't fill it with images and moving pictures.

less is always better than more when it comes to sites.

good example are these yahoo answer pages....nothing more than a yahoo logo image, 3 images for "ask" "answer" and "discover" otherwise its cells, text and forms. less is best.

Some advice is to go light on any flash if you are using any at all. Tons of flash my be good for interaction, but it will slow down older PCs. A poorly designed flash object can slow down even a newer PC.

Also, try your webpage out in many browsers, not just IE or Firefox. Sometimes you can find problems that you wouldn't see in other browsers. And it's just nice to have the page look the same in all browsers.

And lastly, if you use a high monitor resolution (such as 1280x1024), turn it down before creating the webpage. Most people will be at 800x600 or 1024x768 and may not like a huge webpage designed for a 1280x1024 resolution.

Don't use "hunt and peck" menu interfaces - which don't describe where they take the user until a rollover is used. This is boring and requires a lot of "driving" the mouse.

Don't use frames, embedded sound, animated GIFs or any moving content. Post movies as a link, not embedded into the page.

Don't subscribe to flashy ad-generator systems. They will be Adblocked anyway. Try to focus on content and less on design.

-Don't do flashy stuff: blinking text, many colors, etc.
-Don't use clipart.
-Don't do a splash screen; unless you're working on an art or video game site.
-Don't have music or a video automatically playing when the page loads; unless you're working on a music site.
-Don't have a video without video control buttons.

-Do have usability testing. You might think it looks good, but guess what....
-Do Keep it Simple, Stupid
-Do image optimization, always.
-Do test pages on all popular browsers; IE, Firefox, Netscape, Safari
-Do test pages on different computers, and different resolutions.
